Winston-Salem's Historic Salem Cemetery
In the shadow of Winston-Salem's tall buildings, Salem Cemetery exudes calmness
and serenity throughout its rolling landscape. Since it was chartered in 1857, Salem
Cemetery reflects the personal taste of individuals who designed their family plots, vaults
and markets. The story of the people of Salem Cemetery is the story of Winston-Salem,
North Carolina.
Old Salem and Salem College
Within a mile from the center of Winston-Salem, the twenty-first century gives way to an earlier
time in the historic district called Old Salem. Cross-timbered houses, costumed interpreters,
historic and interactive museums, and period-accurate gardens show and tell the story of the Moravian
town of Salem, established in 1766.
Winston-Salem: Then & Now
Winston-Salem is a contrast between the industrial, business-oriented town of Winston and the
religious, historical town of Salem. When the city of Winston-Salem formed in 1913, the combination
pooled the strengths of both towns, defining the character of this city.
Winston-Salem: From the Collection of Frank B. Jones Jr
The neighboring towns of Winston and Salem combined their creative, cultural, and industrial forces
in 1913, and the city of Winston-Salem was born. Building upon its rich Moravian heritage, the
Piedmont North Carolina city was the founding home for corporations in the tobacco, textile, aviation,
banking, and medical industries.
Winston-Salem in Vintage Postcards
The Moravian town of Salem joined with its industrial neighbor, Winston, to officially become the city
of Winston-Salem in 1913. Located in the Piedmont section of North Carolina, at the foothills of the
Blue Ridge Mountains, Winston-Salem has a rich cultural heritage.
Edison Visits Winston-Salem
August 29, 1918 was a great day to be in downtown Winston-Salem. There was no
forewarning, no advance notice that this would be a red-letter day in Winston-Salem
history. You just had to be there.
